Strong partners: The Mercedes-AMG team WINWARD Racing and RAVENOL bring the son of ex-Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher into the 2022 DTM .
The Mercedes-AMG Team WINWARD Racing (WWR) is expanding its activities in the 2022 DTM season. In addition to the reigning champion Maximilian Götz (36, Uffenheim) and the seven-time DTM race winner Lucas Auer (27, Kufstein), the young German talent David Schumacher will drive a third Mercedes-AMG GT3 for the German-Texan squad.
The DTM use of the racing car is made possible by the partnership with DEKRA and Schaeffler-Paravan as well as Ravensberger Schmierstoffvertrieb GmbH, which under the brand name RAVENOL is one of the premium suppliers of lubricants, greases, care products, coolants and winter chemicals and also directly involved manufacturers in the field of engine and transmission technology. RAVENOL has been closely connected to the Schumacher family for many years and is making a strong commitment to this connection with the DTM engagement for David Schumacher.
“RAVENOL works in partnership with many DTM teams,” says Martin Huning, Motorsport Director RAVENOL. “The extremely high level of competition in the DTM is a great incentive for us. The performance of our products is the focus here. RAVENOL has been cooperating with the most successful German racing driver family for years. So it is only logical that David Schumacher is going into his DTM debut season with a Mercedes-AMG GT3 in the RAVENOL design.”
The 20-year-old son of the former Formula 1 and DTM driver Ralf Schumacher earned his first spurs in single-seater racing. Last season, the Rhinelander, who was born in Salzburg, Austria, contested the FIA Formula 3 Championship for the Italian Trident team and impressed with a win and two podiums in this highly competitive junior series.
Last autumn, David Schumacher took the opportunity to drive a Mercedes-AMG GT3 for the first time in Le Castellet/France and immediately got along very well in the unfamiliar GT3 racing car. “The two vehicle categories are worlds apart,” emphasizes Schumacher, who completed the first test drives for the Mercedes-AMG Team WINWARD Racing in Portimão, Portugal, on Wednesday of this week. “Just because of the much higher weight, you have to drive the GT3 much more gently than the formula car. At first I was really shocked by the ABS, I didn’t know that in a racing car at all. Nevertheless, I quickly felt comfortable in the Mercedes-AMG GT3. It really puts you in a good mood!”
The rookie is deliberately not setting his expectations too high for his first season in the DTM: “I am aware that I have to learn a lot in order to survive in this incredibly high-class racing series. My goal for the first year is to get used to the racing car and to absorb the many details that are important in the DTM. With Lucas and Maximilian, I have two very experienced teammates who I can use as a guide. In the Mercedes-AMG Team WINWARD Racing and with the support of my long-term partner RAVENOL, I certainly have the perfect conditions to work my way up to the top step by step. A huge challenge awaits us all – but also a lot of fun! I would like to thank my partners DEKRA, RAVENOL and Schaeffler-Paravan for giving me this opportunity!”
WWR team boss Christian Hohe Nadel thinks highly of his newcomer: “Despite his youth, David approaches the matter in a highly professional manner. He knows the great task ahead of him and takes on it with great ambition. We all know how high the grapes are in the DTM, so his first season in this tough competitive environment can’t be anything other than an apprenticeship. We will support him with all our experience to the best of our ability. I’m convinced that David will bring us a lot of joy with his talent, his diligence and his team spirit! He undoubtedly brings the perfect genes with him …”
The 2022 DTM includes eight events with 16 races in Germany, Portugal, Italy, Austria and Belgium. The season opener takes place on April 30th/May 1st at the Algarve Circuit in Portimão. The TV station ProSieben broadcasts all DTM races live and also provides extensive pre- and post-event reporting.
